PUBLIC PIANOS

In the spirit of our instrument giveaway, we installed a couple of outdoor pianos in Richmond, VA—it’s one way we can connect with each other during this disconnected time. Under stay-at-home orders, Virginians are permitted to:

  1. be outside to obtain food, beverages, goods, and services

  2. engage in outdoor activity, including exercise

  3. travel to and from a residence, educational institution, place of worship, or work

While you’re doing that, play a piano. They’re on—or in front of—private property, and the community is not only welcome but encouraged to enjoy them. Posted on each piano are Covid-19 precautions and safety reminders.

Among our earliest participants in the Public Pianos project, Helen. During a walk she seized the opportunity to enjoy melodic fresh air.

This was installation day for our Public Pianos project. American Spark's May-Lily Lee was overcome with joy. Words were inadequate in expressing her true depth of emotion, so she danced.

WHERE, WHERE, OH WHERE?

“Where can you find them?” Funny you should ask. Piano 1 is at Grove and Libbie next to Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint. Piano 2 is at N. Robinson and Grove diagonally across from Retreat Hospital. Oh, and if you finish playing, or walk by one and see the lid open, close it—to protect the keys a scoonch.
